Being a foster family in the Dominican Republic means opening your home temporarily to a child or teenager whose rights have been violated, while their situation is resolved. The process includes assessment and training sessions; knowing how to act in an emergency — with first aid and CPR — is part of responsible care.

The first-aid requirement

In the Dominican Republic, family fostering is coordinated by the Consejo Nacional para la Niñez y la Adolescencia (CONANI), through its Departamento de Protección Especial, under the Código para el Sistema de Protección (Ley 136-03). Foster families take part in training sessions and an assessment process. No rule has been identified that expressly requires a first-aid certificate, but holding current first-aid and CPR training is commonly expected for the safe care of a minor.

Support and supervision are handled by CONANI. A first-aid and CPR certificate is in addition to — not a replacement for — the suitability assessment and the caregiving abilities the institution evaluates, and it should be kept current.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
