In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. For nursing staff, continuing education is a legal obligation to recertify the licence; for support staff and elderly caregivers, CPR and first aid are a valued condition to work. Here is what the rules require for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

In the Dominican Republic, nursing practice requires the exequátur of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) and registration with the Colegio Dominicano de Profesionales de Enfermería (CODOPENF), created by Law 43-18. As a professional duty, a nurse must keep their competencies current and be able to act in an emergency, which places basic life support and CPR among the expected competencies.

Law 43-18 provides that, to recertify the practice licence, the member submits to the College an up-to-date certificate of attendance at permanent and continuing education programmes, as set by regulation. Continuing education is thus no longer merely voluntary: it is a requirement to maintain the credential.
